Eclectus Parrot

Taken from the Artist's sketchbook this idea for the eclectus parrot drawing is seen as a tiny pencil sketch not much larger than shown here.

The idea is developed into a drawing the actual size of the finished work.

The drawing is now transferred to the Rising Stonehenge paper, colour grey, paper size 14x11 inches image size show here approximately 8.5x12 inches, a little more of the background is out of view.

Rexel Derwent watercolour pencils outline the leaves and the bird. Then with light circular strokes the areas are filled in with colour.

Next step is to intensify the colour, while defining some of the details on the leaves, bark and feathers.

A flat, quarter inch, watercolour brush with angle bristles is used to "paint" the leaves and feathers with water - further intensifying the colour and smoothing the pencil lines. The branches are left with the pencil texture.

Background is begun with lighest shades of green, yellow, blue and violet. Distant leaves started with blue-grey.

More colour is now added to the lower leaves and the feet, beak, eye and feathers on the bird are made clear.

More background is added and the rest of the leaves intensified. At this stage the Eclectus Parrot is almost finished. The drawing will be hidden from view for a few days and then returned to afresh for the finishing touches.
