Background on the Painting

"Bobcats are rarely seen by people although they are fairly widespread throughout North America. Their shy nocturnal habits keep them out of sight - which is a pity because they are very attractive members of the cat family.

I first met the bobcat who was the model for my recent painting and print "Secret Valley - Bobcat" in June 1991 when he was just a few weeks old. I painted him twice over in "Bobcat Kittens" (12"x16") and when I saw him again the Fall of that year he had grown into a gorgeous young cat - all fur and eyes!

The painting was started soon after I got my photographs back from processing and the 15"x30" canvas was underway when I was getting ready to spend a few weeks in Costa Rica. I had decided to escape the winter that year and took with me a few 'works in progress' to paint while I was there. After all, I reasoned, I couldn't spend all my time exploring the jungles! I was right. The jungles of Costa Rica are fascinating, but HOT!

I got quite a bit of work done in the six weeks I was there and when it was time to return home I rolled the canvasses up and put them in my hand baggage. They traveled safely back home and the restretched paintings were completed in my studio.

Originally I had planned a different background for the bobcat - but as sometimes happens - the painting took over! A little valley I had seen in the eastern Rocky Mountains a few years earlier kept coming back into my mind. I had taken photographs there in the early evening and the sun had very nicely caught the edges of the rocks and bushes - sagebrush and fluffy heads of rabbit brush. The scene had been waiting for just the right animal to be included! "
