WORK IN PROGRESS
Watercolour Pencils"I am having great fun with my new set of Derwent watercolour pencils."
Until recently most of my drawing was confined to preparatory sketches for my oil paintings. However, when I needed some small pieces in a hurry to take to a show, I hit on the idea of doing some colour pencil drawings.
They were a great success at the show and I was encouraged to indulge in a full set of 72 pencils and to investigate the properties of various coloured drawing papers. I also explored the options for framing works on paper. I am very pleased with the results.
Not only are these drawings very affordable to my collectors, but they are very satisfying for me to do. I have far more ideas and reference material than I can ever convert into oil paintings - as they take such a long time to complete. Drawings are much quicker.
I started with some small vertical drawings of my favourite tigers - then I did some lions and zebras and framed them in standard 14"x11" gold frames. Thus was born the "Big Cat Series" and the "Safari Series".
Then I turned to smaller subject matter and started the "Butterfly Series" which I frame in square 'shadowbox' frames and hang them from the corner to make a 'diamond shape'. They fool some people into thinking that they are real collected butterflies when they see them at an art show. I have to remind them that they are at an art show and not in a natural history museum!
Next I decided to do some seashells - two shells arranged vertically in each drawing on sand coloured paper. These are framed quite uniquely using embossed paper in with the matting.
Then I had this other idea......"
