JOAN SHARROCK ........... Artist - Wildlife Painter
KENYA - 1984 Treetops, Mount Kenya, Samburu, Lake Baringo, Naivasha, Masai Mara, Amboseli.
Left: A very official looking 1984 safari photo taken at Keekorok Lodge in the Masai Mara, Kenya. The artist is in the center.
"The first night we stayed in the Mara we spent in these thatch covered tents. A pride of lions killed a buffalo about 50 yards to the left of the spot where this photo was taken. We could clearly hear them feeding very close by - and we were trying to sleep! Next morning we found pug marks in the sand right behind the tents!"
NEPAL 1986 and 1987 Chitwan National Park, Tiger Tops

Photos, Above Left: Standing is Devi Gurung, manager of Tiger Tops Jungle Lodge in Chitwan National Park, Nepal. He is seeing the visitors safely onto their elephants for the morning's safari into the park. Above Right: A cold misty morning in Chitwan. One of the elephants is crossing the Rapti River."Tiger Tops Jungle Lodge was a magical place. The morning and afternoon trips into the park on elephant back were unforgetable. We frequently encountered the Indian rhino for which the Park is famous but one morning a mahout spotted a sloth bear and we all set off in pursuit. Elephants don't exactly gallop, but they can certainly run at quite a speed!
As for the tigers, we were not lucky enough to see them by day but at night they came to feed on the bait put out for them. With the aid of a spotlight were able to watch them feeding from the safety of a blind.
The dry bamboo undergrowth in the sal forest of Chitwan and the whole Tiger Tops experience inspired this tiger painting." - Joan.Painting: "Terai Tiger" oil

Collection of Ms. N. Spencer, Maryland.I spent six weeks in Costa Rica in the winter of 1991/92. When I was not taking excursions into the jungles to find toucans, spectacled owls and leaf-cutting ants, I was improving my Spanish and working on the several paintings which I had taken with me.
Jungles are very hot, steamy places; the colour scheme is mostly green and brown and hardly a leaf is untouched by insects and/or fungus. Green and brown are not my favourite colours with which to paint. Most paintings of the rain forest have to be an idealized impression - such as the paintings of toucans shown here - I painted them several years later - after the realities had worn off!
