Your web site should be:

  • well thought-out
  • visually appealing
  • quick to load
  • easy to use
  • printable
  • as individual as you are

If you are looking to establish your presence on the Internet you can have a home page 'brochure' style web page designed for you for as little as US$200 (C$300). This does not include the cost of Web Hosting or registering a Domain Name.

A Basic 'Brochure' Web Page includes:

  1. Custom made background (not just a colour)
  2. A banner with your name and/or logo taken from your existing business materials, or designed for you.
  3. Design, colour scheme and overall 'feel' of site with your input and consultation.
  4. Two or three scanned photographs, inserted with captions.
  5. One page of text, laid out appropriately, including all contact information.
  6. Code written by hand in HTML 3.0 (HyperTextMarkupLanguage) with appropriate META tags inserted to enable Search Engines to find your site.
  7. Testing your site in Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer to ensure it loads quickly and correctly.
  8. Uploading your web page onto your web host, testing it again.
Developing Your Site:
Once you have a basic home page design your site can be expanded to include a Home Page and two or three other linked pages separating the information logically. For an artist these pages would likely be 'Biography', 'Artwork', and 'Exhibitions'.
Multiple pages would have appropriate links to other pages, custom designed link buttons, maps, indices, thumbnail images which when clicked on link to larger versions (either separate web pages or just to another window in the user's browser). Depending on the quantity and variety of content you wish to make available on the Internet, the possibilities are virtually endless.

Necessary Essentials:
A domain name and web site host. (Your Internet service provider may provide you with space on their site where you can put your web pages if you do not have your own domain name.)

Domain Name:
Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or web host will probably be able assist you with registering your own Domain Name provided your site is located on their server. Cost to 'own' a domain name varies, and is presently approximately US$75 for three years. Availability of domain names can be checked out easily.

Web Hosting:
The company hosting your site should have an established track record and have full technical support staff. You should have at least 10 MB of space for the site, 20 MB is better and you should be able to have more than one Email address, should you require it. If you do not already have Email, your ISP should be only a local phone call away from you. However your site can be anywhere, it can be uploaded via the Internet. (Recommended ISP and web host in Vancouver, Canada, is Dowco.com http://www.dowco.com who offer Email access, via the Internet, worldwide.)

Uploading Your Site:
Once your web site is designed following information will be required in order to upload it to the Internet:

  • Domain Name or URL on another site, e.g. either http://www.jones.com or http://www.bigcompany.com/jones.html
  • User Name
  • Password (User Name and Password information can be obtained from your Internet Service Provider or your Web Host.)
  • Email address and phone number of the "Help Desk" of the ISP or Web Host (to troubleshoot any problems associated with uploading site).

Visibility & Maintenance:
All web pages will be written with the appropriate META tags to enable the Search Engine's robots to find your pages. In addition after the site is uploaded it will be submitted manually to the major Search Engines including Yahoo, HotBot and Lycos. Your site should be checked regularly in order to eliminate out-of-date material and/or to upgrade it. Additional pages, maintenance and images will be charged at the hourly rate.

Estimating the Cost of your Web Page Design
The initial design of a Basic 'Brochure' Web Page may take five or six hours in total. Additional pages can be created much more quickly as they are based on the already designed format. (If text is provided in digital form will take far less time to insert than if it has to be typed. Likewise images sent via Email are quicker to manipulate than if they have to be scanned.)
In estimating the cost of your web pages consider that images can be scanned and coded at the rate of about 4 per hour. Designing a custom made graphic for a banner or link buttons, for instance, may initially take a couple of hours. However once they are designed they can easily be duplicated and adapted for other pages on the site.
Once your requirements are known, you will receive an estimate for the expected cost of designing your web pages. If your site is developed in less time that the estimate you will not be charged the full estimated price, you will only be charged for actual work performed.

Fees:
Web design service is charged at an hourly rate of US$30 (C$45). You will only be billed for work done, there is no monthly maintenance fee. Initial consultation and estimates are free.
